Highlights of Recent GeoSentinel Data

Relative Risk of Malaria Acquisition by Region of Travel
(based on n=30,233 travelers in the GeoSentinel Database as of December 2002)

* Reference group

An approximate risk ratio of malaria acquisition by region was determined using the cases of malaria seen at GeoSentinel clinics broken down by region visited as numerators and World Tourism Organization (2) data as estimates for denominators.  Other estimates of malaria risk for travelers have relied on national malaria surveillance data and the numbers of travelers to specific destinations.  GeoSentinel data supports the general trends of risk previously reported, but suggests a greater relative risk estimate for Central America.
