Information on Becoming a GeoSentinel Network Member

ISTM Members with post-travel patient populations who are unable to participate in systematic surveillance as GeoSentinel Sites but who are willing to more informally provide leads and contacts when they encounter patients having unusual diagnoses can become GeoSentinel Network Members:

Participation:

An informal e-mail (or, if desired, completion of a simple  Web-based form) to GeoSentinel upon encountering any patient with an infection found on a limited list of alarming diagnoses.
An informal e-mail for any unusual clinical event at the Network Members discretion.
Respond to brief (no more than 3 minutes) periodic e-mail queries regarding potential outbreaks or trends in travel-related infections.

Benefits:

GeoSentinel Network Member designation.  Recognition by others as a member of a worldwide network belonging to ISTM/CDC.  Printed wall certificates will be provided.
GeoSentinel has an established record of promoting recognition by name, in the press, on ProMed, in ISTM NewsShare, and in public health bulletins, of individuals reporting a key sentinel event.
Accelerated acquisition of Alerts & Advisories on breaking events from GeoSentinel in advance of notification of the general ISTM  membership.
Members-only section of the GeoSentinel Website which will include:
Compilations of leads and interesting observations from other Network Members.
Regular Network Reports on collated findings and comparison of Network Member event reports with the main GeoSentinel database.  Results of periodic outbreak queries. Network Members meeting at every ISTM.

GeoSentinel allows large numbers of ISTM members to link together to help each other.  Rapid and global public health responses in the face of possible or established international outbreaks will be facilitated.  Time input by individual GeoSentinel Network Members is minimal but collective output and benefit are potentially great.
