The Journal of Travel Medicine is now included in Medline I am pleased to announce that the Journal of Travel Medicine (JTM) has been accepted for indexing in Medline. I hope this status will appeal to the young investigators who have avoided publishing in JTM because they must publish in indexed journals. I know this is good news for established investigators as well! I want to thank all of you who have contributed to the success of our journal. Becoming indexed is truly a group effort, and many people, from authors to editors to publisher, deserve credit. I believe our being indexed clarifies that the Journal of Travel Medicine is a respected and important voice for the issues of travel medicine. I encourage all of you to continue to contribute to our journal frequently. With a little effort we hope to move to six issues per year and cut down on the delay to publication. Charles Ericsson, Editor-in-chief, ISTM, Journal of Travel Medicine 6th Conference of the International Society of Travel Medicine Montreal, 6-10 The Scientific Program Committee, chaired by Christoph Hatz and Frank Bia, has endeavoured to make this Conference a unique, exciting and stimulating educational experience. The Programme will focus on essential issues pertaining to travel medicine such as prevention of travel related health disorders and their management among the various groups of travelling populations. Some areas cannot be missed such as malaria, immunizations, diarrhoea and emerging infectious diseases. ABC’s workshops will provide unique opportunities to refine your knowledge and skill in what constitutes the basis of a Travel Medicine practice. In those “classic” areas new information will be presented. We will have updates of the new antimalarials such as Malarone, Etaquine, Azithromycin and Artemether-Benflumetol. The ETEC vaccine is on the horizon and will likely be launched around the time of our Conference. A review of antibiotic drug resistance and it’s impact on prophylaxis for travellers’ diarrhoea in different areas of the world will help you better prepare the travellers. An area of concentration will be the health of migrant populations. Furthermore, educational topics and current research questions will be addressed. The role of travel in the spread of emerging infectious diseases will be extensively covered, including new data that are just being reported on the risk of TB in travellers. This conference would not be complete without touching the innovative techniques for delivering travel health advice. We hope to include among those a “computer petting zoo” where you will learn how to use the Internet in your travel medicine practice. Want to submit an abstract for the Conference? The deadline for submission of an abstract is 15th January 1999. All the information, forms and instructions are on the CISTM6 web page Dominique Tessier Travel Medicine Development in Asia Pacific Region The 2nd Asia-Pacific Travel Health Congress and Exhibition was held in Taipei, Taiwan on 10-13 July 1998 organised by Professor Ying-Hua Shieh. Also inaugurated was the newly created Asia-Pacific Society of Travel Medicine (ASTM). During this three day conference entitled “Travel Medicine approaches the year 2000”, 135 topics, including country reports from the region, various topics, including country reports from the region. This second regional meeting confirms the important role of the Asia-Pacific region in global travel, already emphasized by the regional meetings held in Singapore in 1995 and Hong Kong in 1997. This very populated and rapidly developing region is both hosting a huge number of foreign visitors, both business travellers and tourists and sends an increasing number of travellers to other countries and continents. Our ISTM was well represented in the scientific programme and a large number of active ISTM members were among the invited speakers. We wish the new Asia-Pacific Society of Travel Medicine every success and hope for close and ongoing collaboration with ISTM. Michel Rey, President ISTM |
