CTH® Renewal Requirements Beginning in 2026
The CTH® renewal process is moving to a five-year cycle beginning with renewals submitted in 2026. CTH® holders will complete 100 renewal points during each five-year cycle using one of two pathways.
Why the Renewal Process Is Changing
The Continuing Professional Development Committee reviewed feedback from CTH® renewal candidates and revised the process to make the requirements clearer and easier to complete. Because the renewal cycle is changing from 10 years to 5 years, the total requirement is changing proportionally from 200 points to 100 points. The revised process also uses self-reporting at the time of application, with supporting documentation required only when an application is selected for audit.
Current CTH® holders will retain their existing certificate expiration date and renew when their current 10-year cycle ends. After that renewal, they will transition to the new five-year renewal cycle.

Renewal Requirements at a Glance
Every applicant must:
- Hold an active license as a health professional.
- Earn at least 50 continuing education points related to travel medicine and the ISTM Body of Knowledge during the current five-year renewal cycle.
- Complete either Pathway A or Pathway B for the remaining 50 points.
- Submit the renewal application and required fee by the published deadline.
Pathway A and Pathway B cannot be combined. All qualifying education, practice, and professional activities must occur within the current five-year renewal cycle.
