Biography
Eric Caumes is currently honorary Professor of Infectious and Tropical diseases, at the University “Paris Sorbonne” in Paris, France, and at the School of Medicine, University of Galway, Ireland. Before being retired Eric was the chairman of the department of infectious and tropical diseases at the Teaching Hospital “Pitié Salpêtrière” in Paris (2013-2021), then consultant in ID at the Hotel-Dieu hospital in Paris (2021-2024). Eric worked in Nepal (1984-1985) and since 1985, has lectured in different universities in the tropics (Laos, Thailand, Mali, …) and presented in many national and international conferences.
Eric is a clinician (MD) certified in dermatology (1989), and in infectious and tropical diseases (1993), and during his career he did research in both fields (PhD). His research concerns returned ill travelers, skin infections and STI, imported tropical diseases and Lyme disease. He has published more than 500 articles in those fields, authored three books, and contributed to a dozen textbooks in travel medicine, or tropical diseases.
Eric has been a member of the Executive Board of the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM)(2007–2011), and the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Travel Medicine (2012–2019). He is presently the chair of the Scientific Program Committee of the CISTM19 (New Orleans, 11-15th May 2025).
