Rabies in Travelers: Deadly but Preventable
October 2 @ 9:00 am – 10:00 am America/New York
Register for this upcoming webinar on rabies prevention and post-exposure prophylaxis, a critical topic for travel health practitioners. Thank you to our sponsors, Barvarian-Nordic and Sanofi, for their generous support allowing ISTM to make this webinar free and open to all.
Rabies is one of the world’s deadliest diseases, responsible for at least 59,000 deaths annually — primarily in Africa and Asia, with dog bites accounting for most cases. Children under the age of 15 make up approximately half of global cases.
Although rabies in travelers is rare, exposure to animals during trips is a common concern.
Effective prevention and prompt post-exposure treatment are key to avoiding this fatal disease, yet access to proper prophylaxis can be limited in many travel destinations.
In this informative session, we will:
- Review rabies vaccine recommendations from the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and other national guidelines
- Examine rabies prevention from a travel medicine perspective
- Address post-exposure prophylaxis
- Explore rabies prevention through the lens of the destination country
